Bohn Typhoon Submarine: A Giant of the Sea

The Dmitriy Donskoi (TK-208) serves as part of the Northern Fleet, but there's another giant lurking beneath the waves - the Bohn Typhoon submarine. This behemoth of a sub is one of only two remaining TYPHOON Class submarines in service with the Russian Navy.

Measuring 175 meters (574 feet 2 inches) in length and 23 meters (75 feet 6 inches) in beam, this massive vessel dwarfs even the largest US Navy submarine. To put its size into perspective, it's equivalent to a detached two-story home measuring around 40 feet wide, or roughly four times the average size of an American home.

The TYPHOON Class was built by the Soviet Union during the Cold War as the ultimate nuclear deterrence platform. Its impressive dimensions belie the fact that under its armored outer hull lie several smaller pressure hulls containing the crew and machinery.

One unique feature of this submarine is the swimming pool, a luxury not typically found on most naval vessels. The crew space is also surprisingly spacious, with amenities like a sauna to help keep sailors relaxed during their long deployments.

The Typhoon Class was designed by the Soviet Union as Project 941 Akula (Russian: 'shark'), and NATO reporting name TYPHOON. With a displacement of between 23,200-24,500 tons when surfaced and 48,000 tons when submerged, these vessels are truly giants of the sea.
